On Friday, 4 August 2023, the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) took swift action against two individuals who violated the speed limit in the Brackendowns suburb. The EMPD high-speed unit officers diligently monitored the stipulated 80km/h speed zone when apprehending a 34-year-old man and a 57-year-old woman for their reckless driving behaviour as reported by IOL.

The first culprit, a 34-year-old male, was driving a white Volkswagen Golf hatchback when he was caught hurtling at an astonishing 146km/h instead of adhering to the prescribed speed limit of 80km/h. Shortly after that, the attention of the EMPD officers was drawn to a 57-year-old female driver in a brown Audi sedan, who was found to be travelling at 129km/h in the same 80km/h zone.

EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa expressed the seriousness of the violations, emphasising that both motorists now face reckless and negligent driving charges. Subsequently, they were apprehended and escorted to the Brackendowns police station to face the legal consequences of their actions. Their impending appearance before the Palmridge Magistrate’s Court will determine the extent of their accountability.

This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers associated with excessive road speed. The EMPD sends a poignant message to the public and all motorists that “speed kills.”

Reflecting on a related incident earlier in the year, the Gauteng Traffic Police’s high-speed unit had dealt with a 36-year-old female driver caught driving at a jaw-dropping 220km/h on the N4 East freeway, where the speed limit is set at 120km/h. The high-speed unit, known for its vigilance on major routes and freeways within Gauteng, identified the driver as she operated a red Volkswagen Golf 7.

Spokesperson Sello Maremane highlighted that the driver faced charges related to reckless and negligent driving in addition to exceeding the prescribed speed limit. This incident underscores the importance of law enforcement’s efforts in curbing such dangerous driving behaviour. The high-speed unit’s success can be attributed to utilising state-of-the-art technological devices, including the moving violation recorders (MVR) deployed during their operations.

The MVR plays a crucial role in monitoring road safety, as it records the average speed measured over a minimum distance of 500 meters. The data captured by this device serves as critical evidence for investigation and prosecution purposes.

These incidents illustrate the commitment of law enforcement agencies to ensuring road safety and enforcing speed limits. The actions taken by the EMPD and the Gauteng Traffic Police’s high-speed unit warn all motorists that reckless driving will not be tolerated, and those who defy the law will be held accountable for their actions. The use of advanced technology in traffic enforcement further bolsters the efforts to create safer roads for everyone.
