Fire Incidents in Gauteng on the Rise

Fire incidents in Gauteng are increasing as Working on Fire Kishugu Joined Venture (JV) Gauteng reported 80 fires since the start of the winter fire season. In July alone, they responded to 28 fire calls, resulting in an estimated 1,000 hectares of land burned.

As August approaches, the JV anticipates more fires, especially as many burning permits for fire breaks expired at the end of July, marking the beginning of the “no smoke period.” General Manager Stephen Boyes urges landowners to remain vigilant during this windy, dry, and warm period and highlights the team’s readiness to tackle the blazes.

The JV uses the Fire Danger Index to assess the fire risk in specific areas, and during August, burning fire breaks without proper permits is restricted by the National Veld and Forest Fire Act of 1998.
