Gauteng Government Teams Up with UberEats to Empower Townships

The Gauteng economic development department has announced a partnership with Uber Eats to create opportunities and jobs for the youth. This collaboration will enable township businesses to access e-commerce markets beyond their communities as reported by The Sowetan Live.

The partnership aims to provide “last mile delivery” job opportunities for fleet managers and direct employment for the youth. Premier Panyaza Lesufi expressed excitement about the initiative, stating that 10,000 South Africans will take over Uber deliveries with the support of motorbikes, skills, and funding.

Uber will invest R200 million in partnership with the Gauteng government, leading to the recruitment and contracting of 2,000 motorbike drivers. However, some Uber owners have expressed dissatisfaction with the partnership, given previous issues related to fee regulation.

The Gauteng Department of economic development outlines the partnership’s goals, including expanding the township e-commerce footprint, accessing opportunities in the digital economy and logistics, and creating job opportunities through merchant and driver partnerships. The partnership also prioritises driving safety.

In addition to the 2,000 motorbike drivers, the UberEats partnership will onboard 2,000 township merchants and 2,000 township-licensed liquor traders, offering them access to tools of trade.
