Explosion in Johannesburg CBD Sends 40 Patients to Hospitals
Several patients were received at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital following an explosion in the Johannesburg CBD on July 19. The incident caused 40 people to be injured and taken to various hospitals for treatment.

In response to the tragedy, the Gauteng Department of Health released a statement informing that the Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, visited five explosion victims at Charlotte Maxeke on July 20.
Regrettably, the explosion led to the confirmed death of an adult male at the scene.
Nkomo-Ralehoko expressed her satisfaction with the swift and efficient response from various teams of emergency medical personnel in attending to the injured. She mentioned that most patients were promptly discharged after receiving medical attention, and those still in the hospital were stabilised and receiving the best care.
According to Professor Maeyane Moeng, Head of Trauma and Chairperson of the Disaster Management Committee at Charlotte Maxeke, the patients under their care would soon be transferred from the intensive care unit to normal wards.
Professor Moeng also urged the public to prioritise their safety during disasters, emphasising the importance of heeding public safety messages and evacuating the scene promptly rather than getting distracted by taking photos or videos. Such distractions could potentially lead to further casualties.
