Gauteng residents are advised to prepare for another cold front this week, with temperatures expected to drop to the low teens. Many hope this will be the final cold spell before warmer weather sets in as reported by The Citizen.

Although the weather won’t be as harsh as in previous weeks, residents are still urged to “layer it up” to stay warm. The regional forecaster, Gauteng Weather, predicts freezing minimum temperatures and high wind factors for the week.

In Johannesburg, temperatures are forecasted to range from 0°C to a maximum of 17°C, while Pretoria will experience a minimum of 2°C and a maximum of 18°C.

The cold weather also challenges electricity demand, as Electricity Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa announced. He emphasised that the Gauteng area is particularly affected, accounting for about 25% of the load. The minister expressed concerns about a surge in electricity demand during the cold front, and if the available capacity doesn’t match the increased demand, load shedding may become necessary.

As residents try to keep warm during the cold weather, the city of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) is urging preventive measures, especially for those living in informal settlements. Following tragic incidents where five people, including a child, died in shack fires, residents are reminded not to leave unattended heating appliances like candles, paraffin stoves, and imbaulas. The EMS emphasises the importance of looking after all heating devices while in use to prevent fire incidents at home.

Gauteng residents should brace for the upcoming cold front and take necessary precautions to stay warm and safe.
