Union Demands Urgent Action from Law Enforcement After Spate of Attacks on Putco Buses

SAMWU is calling on the law to help with bus attacks. This concerning spate of attacks on buses in Soshanguve follows similar incidents in other provinces. Three Putco buses were recently targeted by armed criminals in the area, with passengers and staff robbed of their belongings and the driver allegedly shot and wounded during the attack. IOL reports that Amanda Tshemese, the union’s spokesperson, emphasised the importance of prioritising the safety of both workers and passengers, stressing that the recent incidents are clear indications that they are under attack and at war with heartless criminals.

The safety of the passenger sector is critical not only for the organisation but also for the country’s economy, as it contributes millions of rand to it. In response to the escalating incidents, SAMWU urges law enforcement agencies to collaborate with them in addressing the security challenges faced by the transport sector. The recent attacks on Putco buses have raised significant concern, and the union is determined to protect its members, drivers, and passengers.

Putco, the bus company affected by the robberies, expressed relief that there were no fatalities among the passengers. But one bus driver suffered a gunshot wound to the hand. The incidents have been reported to the Rietgat police station, and Putco is cooperating with the investigations. The company appeals to witnesses and anyone with information about the incidents to come forward and assist the police in swiftly bringing the perpetrators to justice.

In a separate matter, Putco recently resumed its bus service after operations in three provinces were suspended due to diesel shortages caused by an outstanding Gauteng Roads and Transport Department subsidy. The issue was resolved through discussions with Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Roads and Transport Logistics MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela. Still, the disruptions left thousands of commuters stranded until government intervention.
