Theft and vandalism of Eskom infrastructure

Theft and vandalism of Eskom infrastructure are on the rise in Gauteng. The power utility is expressing growing concern over the escalating incidents. Mashangu Xivambu, Eskom’s senior maintenance and operations manager in Gauteng, emphasises that these criminal acts not only lead to substantial revenue losses but also result in increased replacement costs for the utility. Moreover, the theft and vandalism of electricity equipment have severe consequences, leaving law-abiding, paying customers without electricity for extended periods and adversely impacting vital community service points, including healthcare and education facilities, businesses, and the overall economy.

In response to the alarming trend, Eskom has implemented enhanced measures and controls to combat its infrastructure’s theft and vandalism, recognising its profound effects on its customers’ livelihoods. The power utility conducts risk assessments to identify hot spot areas and strategically positions static guards at these vulnerable sites. Armed response patrols are also carried out along identified routes and critical infrastructure locations to deter potential criminals.

However, Eskom acknowledges that it cannot win this battle alone and actively collaborates with various stakeholders to address the issue comprehensively. Community members, community security companies, business forums, community policing forums (CPF), and the South African Police Service (SAPS) are among the partners engaged in the collective effort to reduce theft and vandalism of electricity infrastructure. Xivambu urges communities that have not yet joined the initiative to unite with Eskom in the fight against this scourge, which affects the entire nation.

The public also plays a crucial role in combating these criminal activities by anonymously reporting suspicious actions to the Eskom Crime Line on 0800 11 27 22 (toll-free) or the nearest police station. By working together, Eskom and the community strive to safeguard the integrity of the electricity infrastructure, ensuring reliable power supply and contributing to the region’s overall prosperity.
