Tshwane SAMWU Prepares to Protest for Wage Increase
Workers from the Tshwane municipality are preparing to stage a protest on Wednesday, calling for salary increments.
Back in April, the Tshwane council approved the 2023/24 budget, which did not include any salary increases for municipal employees in the current fiscal year as reported by Eyewitness News.

The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) in Tshwane is leading the charge, demanding salary increases ranging from 3.5% to 5.4%.
In a statement, SAMWU provincial secretary Mpho Tladinyane announced that they intend to submit a memorandum of demands to the Tshwane municipality. Apart from salary increments, workers are also concerned about issues related to performance management systems, the metro police grading system, and contracts awarded by the city.
In response to the demands, Tshwane’s executive mayor, Cilliers Brink, has asserted that the city, facing financial challenges, cannot afford to grant the requested salary hikes. Consequently, the mayor has sought an exemption from the bargaining council for this financial year.
The workers plan to assemble at the old Putco bus depot in Marabastad before going to Tshwane House to voice their demands during the march.
