Power Restored to Joburg CBD Blast-Affected Residents
City Power has commenced the process of restoring electricity in the Joburg CBD following the recent explosion, and they anticipate that all affected residents will have their power supply reinstated by Tuesday afternoon as reported by the Times Live.
Around 2,820 households on Lilian Ngoyi Street (formerly known as Bree) experienced disruptions to their water and electricity services due to the suspected gas explosion, which tragically resulted in one fatality and left 48 people injured.

As of 11:40 am on Tuesday, City Power reported that at least 50% of the residents’ “load feeding” from the Bree substation has been re-energised. This includes areas such as Bank City, Pritchard, Loveday, Jeppe, West, Diagonal, Sauer, Harrison, President, and Simmons streets, as well as the surrounding area west of Lilian Ngoyi Street.
However, certain streets east and north of Lilian Ngoyi Street, along with sections of President, Jeppe, Kerk, Plein, Loveday, Rissik, Harrison, and Von Brandis streets, are still awaiting the restoration of electricity.
City Power is diligently conducting additional tests on other feeders and cables, ensuring they undergo pressure testing before further restoration efforts are carried out. They express their confidence in restoring power to all customers by this afternoon.
The dedicated team worked tirelessly overnight, and after receiving clearance from the emergency services, disaster management, and labour department, they proceeded with the restoration process. Notably, gas levels have now been cleared at 1% on the risk matrix, allowing for safer restoration efforts.
Furthermore, City Power expects to address the restoration of feeder cables under the collapsed road structure along Lilian Ngoyi Street after preliminary testing this morning indicated no hindrances.
City Power is taking systematic steps to restore electricity in the affected areas, ensuring safety measures are met and striving to complete the process promptly.
