Nigerian Man Dies in South African Police Custody, Sparking Outrage and Demands for Justice

A Nigerian man allegedly died in police custody in South Africa, as Abiodun Victor Olawunmi reportedly passed away while in the hands of the South African Police Service in Johannesburg. SundiataPost reports that details surrounding the incident remain unclear. But a post by Edward Sunday, a Nigerian residing in Sandton, Gauteng, claimed that Olawunmi suffocated at the hands of the South African police.

Reports indicate that the deceased was arrested during a raid in Johannesburg Central and its surrounding areas conducted by Minister of Police Bheki Cele on Saturday, July 15, 2023. After learning of the arrest, Olawunmi’s brothers prepared to visit him at the police station. An officer soon contacted them, informing them of his death.

When they arrived at the Johannesburg Central Police Station, they found their brother’s body in the parking lot. Photos shared on the Nigerians in South Africa Facebook page depict Nigerian nationals protesting against the tragic death of Olawunmi.
