level 1 water restrictions

The City of Johannesburg has reminded residents of the annual level 1 water restrictions. Residents must continue to conserve water to ensure a continuous supply and avoid limitations of reservoirs due to high water demand outstripping supply.

It is important to note that the City of Johannesburg relies on supplies from other provinces that feed into the Vaal Dam system for residents to have water on their taps. This reliance means that all residents must always be mindful of the water they use daily to ensure enough to go around.

Under level 1 water restrictions, watering of gardens is not allowed between 6 am and 6 pm in summer months (1 September to 31 March), and residents are also not allowed to wash paved areas and driveways using hose pipes. Residents should report all leaks to Johannesburg Water.

To save water, residents are encouraged not to leave taps dripping, wash their car on the grass to water the lawn at the same time, shorten their showering time, use a glass of water to rinse when brushing their teeth, take shallow baths and avoid filling their bath to a depth greater than 100mm, and re-use grey water to water their garden or pot plants.

Johannesburg Water is committed to providing sustainable water, and fines will enforce water restrictions to consumers who contravene the Water Services By-law. In addition, Joburg Water has urged residents to report non-compliance to the JMPD 24/7 hotline on 011 758 9650. We can ensure a sustainable future for all by working together and conserving water.
