Illegal Mining Identified as Cause of Boksburg Gas Leak, Says Ngodwana
Ekurhuleni Mayor Sivuyile Ngodwana says illegal mining is the cause of the Boksburg gas leak. Jacaranda FM reports that Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said the incident had claimed the lives of at least 24 people, including three children.
Four individuals are in critical condition at the hospital, while 11 others are in serious but stable condition. Ngodwana, speaking to the SABC, confirmed that the gas leak was not an explosion but a result of a leakage caused by the operations of illegal miners known as “zama zamas.”

The presence of mining equipment within a shack contributed to the gas leak, leading to devastating consequences for numerous individuals. The deceased include eight males and five females. The youngest of the children was just one year old.
Authorities are gathering further information and expecting the findings of the police and forensic pathologists working tirelessly to uncover the details of this tragic event.
