Minister Ramokgopa Vows to Tackle Load Shedding With Uncertain Timelines
Minister of Electricity, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, has reiterated the government’s commitment to finding solutions to end load shedding in South Africa. However, he has refrained from providing a specific timeline for these plans as reported by Eyewitness News.
The proposed measures are initiatives to repair the deteriorating coal-fired power plants and implement long-term strategies to increase generation capacity within the national grid.

Speaking at a media briefing in Pretoria, Ramokgopa shed light on the progress made in implementing the energy action plan. The nation’s most industrialised economy has been severely impacted by persistent power cuts for over 15 years. These outages have hindered business operations, weakened the rand, and dampened investor confidence.
While acknowledging some improvements in generation capacity, Ramokgopa emphasised that substantial efforts are still required to completely eliminate power cuts. He opted not to provide a specific date for the resolution but instead focused on the number of megawatts that will be added to the grid.

Ramokgopa expressed relief that South Africa managed to avoid the worst-case scenario of stage 8 load shedding during the winter season, with measures in place to mitigate the severity of power cuts. He encouraged the public to analyse the available data to better understand the trajectory towards the cessation of load shedding. Rather than offering specific dates, Ramokgopa emphasised that the ongoing situation provides evidence of the progress being made.
Despite improvements in the energy availability factor, differing viewpoints exist within the government regarding the timeframe for households and businesses to experience an end to load shedding.
