Derick Hougaard Shows Signs of Improvement After Weeks in ICU
Rugby fans worldwide received hope as legendary player Derick Hougaard opened his eyes after weeks in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at a hospital in Tshwane. Algoa FM reports that the beloved “Liefling of Loftus” had been in a coma and on a ventilator at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital, where he has been battling respiratory pneumonia.
Throughout this challenging period, Hougaard’s girlfriend, singer Nadine, has been providing updates on his condition through her official Facebook page, expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support and well wishes from fans and the public.

Recent updates from Nadine revealed the setbacks Hougaard faced as his left lung collapsed, followed by the lower part of his right lung a few days later. However, on Thursday, a glimmer of positive news emerged. Nadine shared that Derick had opened his eyes and responded positively to the new antibiotics administered. Furthermore, he demonstrated promising brain function by answering questions.
While Derick Hougaard’s recovery journey continues, with ongoing treatment for other complications, there is optimism as his sedation has been reduced. Nadine mentioned that although he could not speak due to the pipes in his throat, he conveyed his tiredness and enduring pain.
Hougaard’s contributions to the sport are widely recognised. In his over 100 games for the Bulls from 2002 to 2008, he made history during the 2002 Currie Cup final against the Golden Lions. He broke Naas Botha’s long-standing record for points scored in a Currie Cup final. He made his test debut for the Springboks at 20 during the 2003 Rugby World Cup.
