Budget constraints hamper Tshwane metro’s refuse collection efforts
Tshwane metro is struggling with the refuse collection due to budget constraints, confirmed spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.
At the beginning of the year, the waste department reduced the number of trucks to cut spending. However, this has resulted in an over-stretching of the collection schedule in areas where trucks are assigned.
Mashigo acknowledged that this has caused collection times to overlap in some areas with more households. Nevertheless, he assured the public that the trucks were still collecting household bins according to schedule.

One resident, Mariah De Swart from Groenkloof, expressed frustration over the municipality’s failure to collect refuse, stating that bins were being stolen.
In response, Mashigo stated that the metro was unaware of bins not being collected and highlighted that reported missed collections are addressed within 24 hours. In cases where collection challenges affect a larger area, a backlog is declared and cleared within 48 hours.
Regarding stolen bins, Mashigo outlined the procedure for residents to follow, stating they should apply for bin replacement with an accompanying affidavit explaining the reason for replacement. He advised residents encountering bin replacement difficulties to visit the region’s nearest customer care centre.
Efforts are underway to address the refuse collection issues in the Tshwane metro, and residents are encouraged to report any concerns or incidents regarding their bins to ensure a swift resolution.
