Man secured R3.5 million job opportunity using fake documents
The CEO of the JRA was sacked on Wednesday. The Johannesburg Roads Agency fired Tshepo Mahanuke after discovering that he had fabricated his credentials to secure the prestigious role, which came with a salary of R3.5 million yearly.
According to Zimeye, Mahanuke, who had been under suspension since November of the previous year, faced scrutiny over his qualifications, including a fictitious Master’s degree from Harvard University. Upon assuming the position in August, Mahanuke allegedly insisted that senior JRA staff refer to him as “Doctor.”
Reports indicate that Mahanuke had purchased an honorary doctorate from Trinity International University of Ambassadors and had falsely claimed to have received a competitive intelligence master’s degree from ACI College, which Harvard had not awarded him.
In November, the JRA placed Mahanuke on leave. An undisclosed agency vetted him and other shortlisted candidates, prompted by concerns raised by former Johannesburg Mayor Mpho Phalatse.

Phumla Majola, the JRA company secretary, confirmed Mahanuke’s dismissal. According to Charles Cilliers, the chair of the JRA board, Mahanuke did not contest the evidence of deception found in his CV, which was submitted during the hiring process.
Cilliers stated that the JRA had conducted an impartial investigation, considering the Labour Relations Act, Schedule 8 of the Code of Good Practice on Dismissal, relevant case law, and the significant legal expenses incurred thus far.
Mahanuke has until Friday to file an appeal, as indicated by Cilliers. He was recruited in August to oversee the management of Johannesburg’s extensive 12,000 km road network, which is currently in a critical state and requires urgent maintenance.
