Laudium residents take matters into their own hands and launch service delivery initiative
Following months of complaints and unsuccessful meetings with metro officials, Laudium residents have taken matters into their own hands and launched a service delivery initiative to address the community’s concerns.
Heading this initiative are Lorraine Maudi, acting director for community service in Region 4, and Naeem Patel, ward 61 councillor. Patel hosted a meeting two weeks ago to discuss the service delivery backlog caused by budgetary constraints that sparked this initiative.
During the meeting, different departmental heads were invited to collectively explore a service delivery checklist that could be implemented without significant financial resources. This action led to forming a team that convened at the Laudium civic centre to plan and execute the initiative.
Among the activities carried out as part of the initiative, residents and the team took the initiative to cut grass in the CBD and around the tennis court, clear obstructive trees along 4th Avenue and other surrounding areas, and repaint road markings in the CBD and 19th Avenue near Tshwane Muslim school.

Patel assured residents that road markings would be completed in the next few days to enhance safety. The councillor focused on revitalizing the CBD as promised, with MMC Peter Sutton visiting the area, engaging with local businesses, and expressing shock at the deteriorating state of Laudium, including issues of illegal dumping, unauthorized businesses, and non-compliance with by-laws.
To address these concerns, Sutton called for Mayor Cilliers Brink to visit Laudium, meet with the community, and work towards resolving service delivery issues. The initiative also prioritized fixing stormwater drains, potholes, and other infrastructure concerns.
Maudi confirmed that the team would return to the ward within three weeks to complete the remaining tasks, ensuring that potholes were filled adequately according to council specifications to guarantee safety.
Acknowledging the Langar Khana for providing meals to the 60 staff members involved in the initiative, Patel expressed gratitude and vowed to continue fighting for the improvement of Ward 61.
Impressed by the community-driven initiative, MMC Sutton expressed his intention to propose its implementation throughout the city to Mayor Brink. The proactive approach taken by Laudium residents has demonstrated their commitment to addressing service delivery challenges and positively impacting their community.
