N1 in Midrand closures

The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) has announced that there will be partial road closures along the N1 in Midrand this weekend, specifically on the N1 Section 21 between the Kosmosdal Samrand Interchange and Rooihuiskraal Interchange in Midrand.

SAnews reports that these road closures are necessary to facilitate essential work by Eskom to install new overhead transmission power lines and a conductor that supplies electricity to the area.

The closures will be on Saturdays from 6 am to 6 pm and Sundays from 6 am to 12 pm. The lanes will be closed in stages for approximately 30 minutes, with complete closures required when cables are dragged across the road.

The closures may be subject to adjustment depending on weather conditions. If any changes occur, SANRAL will issue a second advisory with updated information on the new closure times.

SANRAL cautions motorists that these partial closures may cause disruptions and delays during afternoon travel, potentially leading to extended travel times in the evening. Detour routes have been identified and will have signposts. Johannesburg Metropolitan Police (JMPD) and Tshwane Metropolitan Police (TMPD) officials will be on-site to monitor and manage traffic, ensuring minimal disruption and maintaining road safety.

For the detour route, motorists will be redirected via the R101. Motorists should plan their trips accordingly, note the alternative routes recommended, and exercise caution when using the roads during this period.

SANRAL has assured drivers that updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

“As an agency entrusted with the management and maintenance of the national road network, SANRAL places great importance on the safety and well-being of road users and the communities in which it operates,” SANRAL said.
