Council employees caught in scandalous act – EMPD seizes misused municipal vehicles

Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at approximately 06:00, the EMPD Security and Loss Control Unit responded swiftly to a tip-off regarding misused municipal vehicles by City of Ekurhuleni council employees in the Benoni area.

Based on the information provided by a reliable source, EMPD members promptly initiated an operation leading them to a high school in Benoni. Upon arrival, they discovered three vehicles parked in the school parking lot: a marked BMW belonging to the EMPD, a marked Ford Ranger belonging to the Disaster & Emergency Management Services Department (DEMS), and an unmarked white Ford Ranger belonging to the Parks Department.

The South African reported that the responsible drivers of all three vehicles had their vehicles confiscated immediately, and EMPD has confirmed that internal investigations will commence shortly.

The EMPD emphasised utilising council resources solely for public service delivery. “Lots of EMPD vehicles are parked in the parking area at the Lifestyle Centre in Sunward Park while they are either going to shop or going for breakfast/lunch,” stated Tina du Toit.

EMPD warned individuals against misusing council resources, reiterating that these resources are to serve the public at large. Misuse of such assets undermines the efficiency of service delivery.

In a separate incident, subcontractors affiliated with the City of Ekurhuleni faced a devastating attack by an enraged mob.

According to city officials, on Monday, March 6, 2023, the City of Ekurhuleni electricians sought assistance from approved electrical contractors to resolve an electrical outage in Sarel Hattingh Street, Klippoortjie AH, Germiston.

Regrettably, community members falsely assumed that these contractors were cable thieves and launched an assault despite the contractors providing necessary documentation, including wayleaves and other paperwork. Tragically, the attack resulted in the unfortunate loss of four contractors’ lives.

The City of Ekurhuleni condemns such acts of violence and expresses deep condolences to the families of the deceased. Investigations into the incident are underway to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
