Unveiled: UNISA’s Vice Chancellor’s Dodgy R285,000 Curtain Expenditure

Concerns arise as inconsistencies are uncovered during a recent investigation into the Vice Chancellor of UNISA. This scrutiny follows Nehawu’s previous call for the suspension of Prof Puleng LenkaBula as reported by Briefly.

This was due to allegations of extravagant spending on her university residence renovations.

Prof. Themba Mosia conducted a comprehensive analysis of the university’s current state. Among the various irregularities that have come to light, the Vice Chancellor’s expenditure of R280,000 on curtains for her residence stands out.

Despite their quality, an independent assessor expressed surprise at the sheer cost of the curtains adorning the Vice Chancellor’s house.

In addition to the lavish curtains, it is alleged that university funds were used for other questionable expenses. These include R8,000 for vacuum cleaner training, R220,685 for interior and exterior painting, and a staggering R1.9 million for a new Mercedes Benz.

In response to these revelations, the National Education, Health, and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) has called for the removal of UNISA’s Vice Chancellor.

Zola Saphetha, the general secretary of Nehawu, emphasised the severity of the situation, stating, “The report has exposed the decay and corruption within the institution.” Nevertheless, Nehawu remains steadfast in its pursuit of stable governance within the university.
