South African Police Service Seizes Gas Cylinder Loaded With Dagga
The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga has implemented stricter security measures to combat the trafficking of dagga from neighbouring countries, including the Kingdom of Eswatini. As a result of these efforts, a 31-year-old suspect was apprehended on Monday, 15 May 2023, at approximately 11:30 am by SAPS members from Mahamba Port of Entry as reported by the South African Police Service.
Enhanced security measures were implemented along the border following the recent discovery of false vehicle compartments used for smuggling. On Monday, 15 May 2023, a new tactic was uncovered when police officers apprehended an undocumented foreign national from the Kingdom of Eswatini, who possessed a sealed gas cylinder loaded with dagga.
Police officials noticed the suspect carrying a plastic bag containing the gas cylinder and became suspicious. Upon thorough inspection, it was revealed that the sealed cylinder contained 4,316 kilograms of dagga, with an estimated street value of R18,127.20.

As a result, the suspect was arrested and charged with possessing dagga and being in the country without valid documentation.
The suspect is scheduled to appear at the Piet Retief Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 17 May 2023, to face the charges mentioned above.
Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, the Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, commended the members for their vigilance, which led to the successful apprehension.
