Residents of Soweto protest over lack of service delivery
Residents of Soweto protest over lack of service delivery issues that have not been addressed. The residents from Orlando West staged a protest overnight, barricading roads with rocks and debris to express their anger over the lack of attention being given to their area’s service delivery issues as reported by Eyewitness News. This follows a similar protest earlier this week when community members in the Doornkop and Lufhereng areas burned tires and blocked roads to express their frustrations with rolling power cuts.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department has advised motorists to avoid the area due to the road closures caused by the protests. The roads affected include Khumalo Road, Zaphenia Mothopeng Road, Xolile Street, Hennessey Street, and Reverend Fredrick Modipe Drive between Hennessy and Mabasuthu Street.

Other affected roads include Koma Road between Mkhweba Street and Moloto Street, Phiri Street, Mapetla, and Molapo.
The protests are a result of residents’ frustration with service delivery issues that have been ignored, with little to no word of any resolution. The police have warned residents to avoid the area and have increased their presence to ensure public safety. Authorities must take swift action to address the residents’ grievances to prevent further protests and unrest in the community.
