Abandoned and forgotten – Jagersfontein dam collapse victims plead for solutions from Mashatile!
The Jagersfontein Dam collapse last September has left residents in Free State struggling to recover. Sadly, one person passed away, while two remained missing, and 186 were homeless due to the disaster, according to Eyewitness News.
To assess the progress made in water infrastructure and the relocation of affected families, Deputy President Paul Mashatile is visiting the area on Tuesday to hear from the community. However, reports indicate that there has been little progress in relieving impacted families, and the dam collapse has resulted in extensive damage to homes, flooding, and contamination of rivers and grazing land.

Although the Free State government had plans to construct 160 homes in response to the disaster, there has been no indication that the government built any. The purpose of Deputy President Mashatile’s visit is to provide oversight and engage with the community to evaluate the progress made by the project.
