Hospital Extends Visiting Hours for Patients’ Loved Ones

Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital has extended its visiting hours for in-patient visits, effective May 1. The hospital now schedules appointments for family members and other relatives from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. every day, including weekends and national holidays. This extension has doubled the visiting period to two hours.

The hospital had previously suspended visiting hours in the emergency and accident units on February 16. The suspension came after the Tembisa community forum allegedly coerced hospital staff during a strike over a lack of basic hospital services.

The hospital had also faced criticism for allegedly providing poor services to patients, which led to a protest by the Tembisa Community Forum outside the hospital on February 17.

To address the issue of bed space, the hospital acknowledged that some patients wait in the emergency room for more than 24 hours before being admitted due to capacity issues. As a result, the hospital suspended patient visits in April 2020 to curb the spread of COVID-19, and when the visits resumed, they were restricted to 15 minutes per patient per day. However, patient visits to the casualty unit remain suspended despite extending visiting hours.
