Singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot dies aged 84

The music world is mourning as we bid farewell to Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot, who passed away at age 84. Lightfoot was a prolific artist who produced many hit songs, including “Dream Street Rose” and “If You Could Read My Mind,” covered by legendary artists such as Elvis Presley, Barbra Streisand, and Johnny Cash. The Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, paid tribute to Lightfoot, acknowledging his significant contribution to the world of music and describing him as one of Canada’s greatest singer-songwriters. Lightfoot died peacefully on Monday at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto due to natural causes, as per BBC.

Lightfoot’s musical journey began in high school, where he showcased his talent as part of a barbershop quartet and won a talent competition. He further honed his skills by studying music composition in the US before returning to Canada and debuting in 1962 with “(Remember Me) I’m the One.” He collaborated with other musicians and produced a string of chart-topping songs. His iconic hit single “If You Could Read My Mind” peaked at number five on the US Billboard chart in 1971 and reached number 30 in the UK.
