Micheal Lomas and 11 Others Face Corruption Charges in Kusile Power Station Case

Micheal Lomas, along with 11 others, is facing over 40 counts of corruption linked to R1.4 billion intended for upgrading Eskom’s Kusile power station in Mpumalanga between 2014 and 2017.
Lomas, 77, was extradited from the United Kingdom in September of last year to face the charges.
Henry Mamothame, spokesperson for the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption, confirmed that the court ordered Lomas to surrender both his United Kingdom passport and South African Identity document to the investigating officer. Lomas will be residing in a care home where he will receive the necessary medical support.
In court, Lomas previously reported suffering from severe dizziness and blackouts, which resulted in an injury during his time in prison.
Lomas fled South Africa in 2019, before his four co-accused were arrested, which triggered the extradition proceedings. He was arrested in the UK in 2021 and granted bail of R1.7 million.
Following the finalisation of his extradition agreement between the UK and South Africa in January last year, Lomas attempted to oppose his return to South Africa, filing five appeals during the process.
