City of Joburg on the brink of chaos! Coalition fails as new mayor selection looms

The City of Johannesburg will elect its third mayor in as many years, with a special council meeting scheduled for Tuesday to select a new executive mayor. Eyewitness News reports that this development follows the resignation of Thapelo Amad, the former mayor who served for just three months.

The two main coalitions in the Johannesburg council, the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the African National Congress (ANC) face disarray as they prepare for the upcoming vote. The DA announced Mpho Phalatse, their caucus leader, as their mayoral candidate, leading to frustration from their coalition partners.

Meanwhile, ActionSA’s national chairperson, Micheal Beaumont, announced that the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), and United Democratic Movement (UDM) would be supporting Funzi Ngobeni, a councillor from their party, for mayor. Beaumont expressed disappointment that the DA had not consulted with their coalition partners before announcing their mayoral candidate.

In the ANC camp, there is indecision regarding whether to choose another candidate from a minor party after Amad’s short-lived term.
