Joburg Open Sponsors’ Gala Celebrates Global Impact of Prestigious Golf Tournament

The 17th edition of the Joburg Open International Golf Tournament kicked off with a sponsors’ welcome function at Houghton Golf Club on Monday, 3 March 2025. Golfers, guests, and corporate partners gathered to celebrate the tournament’s legacy and its contribution to Johannesburg’s global profile.
In recent weeks, the City of Johannesburg has hosted several high-profile international events, including the U20 Summit and the G20. Addressing attendees at the gala dinner, Executive Mayor Cllr Dada Morero highlighted the city’s growing role on the global stage.

“As we gear up for the G20 and the African Forum on Urban Forests, these events reinforce Johannesburg’s position as a leader in innovation and economic growth. We are also excited for the Joburg Open, which tees off on Thursday. I will take the opening shot to launch the tournament officially. Events like these strengthen our international partnerships and attract investment,” said Mayor Morero.
He also acknowledged the unwavering support of the tournament’s sponsors, particularly in challenging economic times.
“The City continues to grow thanks to partners like the DP World Tour and the Sunshine Tour. Our collaboration, which began in 2007, has achieved remarkable milestones, and we look forward to reaching even greater heights together,” he added.
Margaret Arnolds, Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Finance, extended her appreciation to the tournament’s sponsors, including the Sunshine Tour, DP World Tour, Hampton by Hilton Hotel, Hyundai, PMG Provantage, Stella Artois, Glenlivet, CIB Insurance, World of Golf, MyGolfLife, Nespresso, Standard Chartered, Gauteng Provincial Government, and Norwood Mall.
“This event remains one of the most significant highlights on our calendar. We truly appreciate our sponsors’ contributions and welcome new partners who will help further develop golf in our country,” said Arnolds.
Thomas Abt, Commissioner of the Sunshine Tour, emphasized the Joburg Open’s global influence.
“The tournament will be broadcast to over 200 million viewers worldwide, once again showcasing Johannesburg’s ability to host world-class events,” said Abt.
Cllr Tebogo Nkokou, MMC for Community Development, underlined the tournament’s impact on young golfers.
“The Joburg Open provides a platform for young talent to shine. We appreciate the dedication of City officials and sponsors who have ensured that the 156 participating golfers and attendees enjoy a safe and memorable experience,” Nkokou said.
Among the competitors, golfers Tristan Galant and Musiwalo Nethunzwi shared their gratitude for the opportunity to participate.
“Growing up in Cape Town, life presented many challenges. But being part of the Joburg Open has been life-changing. It has given me a chance to showcase my talent, grow my game, and compete with the best. I’m grateful to the City of Johannesburg for making this possible,” said Galant.
With the tournament set to begin, the excitement continues to build as Johannesburg reaffirms its status as a premier sporting and investment hub.
