zaghrahSince its launch in January 2024, Temu, owned by global retail giant PDD Holdings, has rapidly gained traction in South Africa’s e-commerce market. Known for its affordable, high-quality products, the platform has quickly become a favorite among budget-conscious South African shoppers.
A recent News24 survey in partnership with Temu revealed that one in three South African respondents have used the platform, with nearly 40% becoming active monthly users. This growth is a testament to Temu’s unique value proposition—offering factory-direct pricing by cutting out intermediaries and connecting consumers directly with manufacturers.
Affordability Driving Loyalty
For many South Africans, price remains a key factor in purchasing decisions. The survey showed that 65% of respondents prioritize affordability, and 81% agree that Temu’s model delivers high-quality products at reduced prices.
Among active users, 46% reported saving over half their shopping budget on the platform. Popular product categories range from household essentials and electronics to inverters and batteries, which are priced more competitively than local alternatives.
This affordability, combined with Temu’s growing reputation for reliability, has earned it strong consumer loyalty:
Logistics and Demand: A Double-Edged Sword
Temu’s popularity hasn’t come without challenges. Logistics partner Buffalo International Logistics has reported delays due to surging demand, highlighting the platform’s rapid rise in South Africa.
According to Sensor Tower data, weekly app downloads in the third quarter of 2024 ranged from 72,000 to 551,000, while active users nearly doubled from 788,000 in August to 1.8 million by late September.
Shifting E-Commerce Trends in South Africa
Temu’s growth reflects broader changes in South Africa’s online shopping landscape:
Temu’s pricing sweet spot—products between R10 and R300—aligns perfectly with these consumer priorities, making it a go-to platform for affordable online shopping.
The Competitive Landscape
Despite its rapid growth, Temu still trails established players in South Africa’s e-commerce market:
Temu’s entry, however, has disrupted the market, pressuring local retailers to innovate and adapt. While industry analysts acknowledge Temu’s impressive rise, they stress that the e-commerce battle is far from over, with South African players retaining a strong foothold for now.
A Wake-Up Call for Local RetailersTemu’s success in South Africa showcases the power of affordable, consumer-focused solutions in driving e-commerce growth. With its factory-direct pricing, diverse product offerings, and savvy marketing strategies, the platform has struck a chord with local shoppers.
As the e-commerce landscape evolves, Temu’s rise serves as both a disruptor and a reminder for South African retailers to innovate, adapt, and meet the growing expectations of online shoppers.
The affordable shopping revolution is here—and it’s just getting started.
