South Africa’s Seshnie Naidu is set to make her mark at the ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup in Malaysia, kicking off on January 18, 2025. With senior team experience and a mentor-driven journey, Naidu’s transformation from pace bowler to leg-spinner has prepared her to take on the global stage.

Born in KwaZulu-Natal, Naidu discovered her love for cricket at just seven years old. Encouraged by her parents, she honed her skills through hard-ball cricket in primary school.

Her cricketing path shifted when she met South Africa U-19 head coach Dinesha Devnarain at the Under-13 KZN Week. Devnarain spotted Naidu’s natural leg-spin action and encouraged her to transition from pace bowling.

“She has helped a lot with my leg-spin and also understanding the game,” Naidu said. “Coach Dinesha has always supported me with skills as well as my head space.”

Naidu isn’t new to international competition. She played in the T20 World Cup in the UAE last year and joined South Africa’s T20 tour of Pakistan, gaining invaluable experience.

“I’m going into this World Cup with more confidence because of my senior team exposure,” said Naidu. “My goal is to be the best leg-spinner at this World Cup, bring home the trophy, and represent my country proudly.”

Devnarain, who has been a guiding force in Naidu’s cricketing journey, has watched her evolve from a promising nine-year-old to a standout player.

“It’s been a pleasure watching Seshnie grow. It’s not just about cricket; we’ve developed a strong connection that goes beyond the field,” said Devnarain.

She added, “Her development is the result of hard work and dedication from both Seshnie and our coaching staff. She’s on the path to becoming a legend of the game.”

Naidu is joined by a talented team led by Kayla Reyneke, the U-19 captain. The squad has been diligently preparing to take on the best young cricketers in the world.

The Proteas Women’s Twitter account shared their excitement:

“We are filled with pride as our young ladies grace the stage of World Cup Cricket. 🌍🏏 #AlwaysRising”

Naidu’s personal and team aspirations are clear. With her family, friends, and extended network cheering her on, she is determined to deliver a standout performance.

The ICC Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup is not just a platform for emerging talents but also an opportunity for players like Naidu to leave their mark on the global stage.
