A 41-year-old parolee has been arrested in connection with a robbery that occurred on Sunday in Mpumalanga, where a State firearm was stolen from a South African Police Service (SAPS) member stationed at Malelane.

The suspect initially fled the scene after the robbery but was apprehended after voluntarily surrendering to the Nelspruit police on Wednesday.

Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli confirmed that the stolen firearm was recovered later on Sunday, the day of the incident.

“We are pleased to inform the public that the suspect is now in custody. The parolee, who has been on the run since the robbery, is currently detained at the correctional centre. Investigations continue to determine the full extent of charges he will face, including robbery of a State firearm and other potential offences,” said Mdhluli.

The investigation is a collaborative effort between SAPS investigators and Correctional Services officials. Legal proceedings are underway, and the suspect is expected to appear in court soon.

The robbery occurred early Sunday morning when the parolee allegedly attacked a SAPS officer and fled with the State firearm and ammunition. Following the incident, police issued an appeal to the community for assistance in locating the suspect, identified as 41-year-old parolee Donald Sipho Khoza.

“Khoza was convicted for rape and murder and was recently released on parole. He is known to frequent the Malelane area and was believed to hold critical information regarding the robbery,” Mdhluli said at the time.

Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, welcomed the quick apprehension of the suspect.

“This arrest demonstrates the commitment of law enforcement to ensure that criminals are brought to justice swiftly, especially in cases where the safety and trust of the public are directly impacted,” said Major General Mkhwanazi.

Further details will emerge as the investigation progresses, with additional updates expected from the authorities.
