SAWS Issues Rainfall and Thunderstorm Warnings Across Six Provinces
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a rainfall warning for several provinces, forecasting an increase in rain across Gauteng, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, the eastern Free State, eastern parts of North West, and parts of Limpopo. The warning is in effect from Wednesday through December 24.
The anticipated rainfall could significantly increase the risk of flooding in the affected areas. SAWS urges the public to stay updated on short-term weather forecasts and heed any warnings issued.
“This substantial rainfall increase is likely to elevate the risk of flooding. As a result, the public is strongly urged to stay informed by following short-term weather forecasts and any warnings issued by the SAWS,” stated the forecaster.
The rainfall and associated cloud cover are expected to bring cooler temperatures to the eastern parts of the country, offering relief from the extreme heat endured in recent weeks.
“South Africa’s interior has faced intense heat waves in recent months, with a particularly severe two-week heat wave in early December setting new temperature records across several provinces,” SAWS reported.
Thunderstorm Alerts
On Thursday, SAWS forecasts isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers in central and eastern regions, with widespread rainfall expected in KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga. These thunderstorms may lead to:
- Heavy downpours causing localized flooding
- Damaging winds
- Hailstorms in areas such as Gauteng, the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and southern Limpopo
On Friday, isolated showers are expected in the northeast, while Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and the eastern parts of North West will experience scattered thundershowers. Light rain is forecast along the south coast.
SAWS will continue to monitor weather patterns closely and provide updates as needed. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and prepare for potential adverse weather conditions.
