Pikitup, in collaboration with the Electronic Waste Association of South Africa (e-WASA) and local waste reclaimers, launched an innovative e-waste recycling programme on December 11 at the Marie Louise landfill site in Soweto. This initiative is set to transform waste management practices in the region while addressing pressing environmental concerns.

Addressing the E-Waste Challenge

With landfill capacities rapidly declining, the programme aims to divert electronic waste from these sites to preserve their lifespan and protect the environment.

Jack Sekwaila, MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, highlighted the importance of this initiative:
“This project will extend the life of Pikitup’s remaining landfill sites and mitigate the harmful effects of electronic waste on our residents and the environment,” said Sekwaila.

As part of the programme, e-WASA has made significant contributions by providing containers, tools, and equipment to assist reclaimers in their efforts. The organisation has invested R1.1 million in state-of-the-art equipment and introduced an incentive system, offering reclaimers 15 cents for every kilogram of e-waste collected and sold.

This effort is not only a step toward environmental sustainability but also creates economic opportunities for reclaimers.

The project aligns with a national policy directive from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment (DFFE), establishing a benchmark for sustainable waste management practices in South Africa.

The launch event showcased the potential of collaborative efforts in tackling one of the most significant environmental challenges of our time.
