Musina Man Sentenced to Two Life Terms for Murder, Rape, and Robbery

A 36-year-old Musina resident, Humbulani Audrin Oliver Hlengani, has been handed two life sentences and an additional 62 years by the High Court in Limpopo for a series of violent crimes. These include murder, two counts of rape, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and more.

Hlengani’s reign of terror spanned from 2013 to 2018, targeting the Musina-Matswale community. According to Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, Limpopo spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Hlengani was armed with weapons, including a knife and firearm, as he broke into homes, assaulted, and raped his victims.

His victims, primarily Zimbabwean nationals renting in the area, endured horrific attacks. In one incident, Hlengani abducted a young girl, strangled her, slit her throat, and burned her body at a dumping site near Famba Zion Church.

The girl’s family waited months for DNA results before they could lay her to rest. Forensic evidence and DNA testing eventually linked Hlengani to his crimes.

Despite pleading not guilty, the court found Hlengani guilty of multiple charges, including housebreaking with intent to rape, possession of a firearm, and attempted theft. Advocate Nnyambeni Nekhambele, representing the State, emphasized Hlengani’s lack of remorse and the fear he instilled in the community.

The court ruled that some sentences would run concurrently, resulting in an effective life sentence. Director of Public Prosecutions in Limpopo, Advocate Ivy Thenga, welcomed the sentence, reiterating the NPA’s commitment to combating violence against women and children.

“This sentence sends a strong message to offenders,” said Thenga, adding that the collaboration between prosecutor Nekhambele and other stakeholders ensured justice was served.

Hlengani’s sentencing underscores the justice system’s role in protecting vulnerable communities and holding perpetrators accountable.

This case highlights the ongoing fight against gender-based violence in South Africa and the justice system’s commitment to safeguarding communities.
