DA Threatens Coalition Exit Over Pressure to Dismiss Education Minister

The Democratic Alliance (DA), South Africa’s second-largest political party, has issued a stern warning to the ruling coalition, threatening to withdraw from the government if Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube is dismissed.

DA leader John Steenhuisen highlighted growing concerns about alleged pressure from African National Congress (ANC) factions to remove Gwarube, who is affiliated with the DA. Speaking on Sunday, Steenhuisen labeled such attempts as an unacceptable influence on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s governance.

“Any effort to fire ministers who are doing their jobs would signal the end of this coalition,” Steenhuisen said.

Coalition at a Crossroads

The ANC and DA, alongside eight other parties, formed a coalition government in June, marking a new chapter in South Africa’s political landscape. The coalition governs nationally and operates in various provinces, including KwaZulu-Natal.

Tensions have recently escalated over disagreements surrounding the Basic Education Laws Amendment Act, signed into law three months ago.

While President Ramaphosa withheld certain clauses of the legislation for further consultation, factions within the ANC are reportedly dissatisfied with Gwarube’s handling of the matter.

Education Policy at the Heart of the Dispute

The Basic Education Laws Amendment Act, which introduces significant reforms to South Africa’s education system, has sparked debates. Critics within the coalition allege miscommunication during the consultation process, fueling calls for Gwarube’s dismissal.

However, Steenhuisen defended Gwarube’s record, emphasizing her proactive approach to addressing disputes.

“This process is entirely separate from the consultation process, and conflating the two is misleading,” Steenhuisen clarified.

Implications for the Ruling Coalition

The dismissal of Gwarube could jeopardize the stability of the coalition government, which has already faced challenges in navigating competing policy priorities.

For the DA, any move perceived as undermining its role in the coalition would threaten its continued participation.

Political Ramifications

This development underscores the delicate balance within South Africa’s ruling coalition. Should the DA withdraw, it would mark a significant political shift and raise questions about the future of the Government of National Unity (GNU).

As consultations over the Basic Education Laws Amendment Act continue, the ruling coalition must navigate these tensions carefully. Maintaining unity while addressing policy disputes will be crucial for ensuring stable governance in South Africa.
