The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued alerts for varied weather conditions across the country. While heatwave conditions persist in several regions, Limpopo and Mpumalanga can expect rain and severe thunderstorms on Monday.

Severe Thunderstorm Warnings

A Yellow Level 2 warning has been issued for the southeastern parts of Limpopo and northeastern Mpumalanga. Residents are advised to prepare for:

  • Possible damage to infrastructure and property.
  • Hail and damaging winds.
  • Heavy downpours leading to localized flooding.
  • Increased lightning risks.

The weather agency warns of potential injuries to people and livestock due to these conditions.

Heatwave and Fire Danger Alerts

For other areas, the heatwave continues to dominate:

  • Regions affected: Northern Cape, Free State, North West, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Lowveld areas of Mpumalanga and Limpopo.
  • The extreme heat is expected to last until at least Wednesday.

In the Western Cape, including the West Coast District and Little Karoo, high temperatures will continue through Tuesday.

Additionally, an extremely high fire danger warning has been issued for parts of the Western Cape, Northern Cape, Free State, and Eastern Cape, underscoring the risk of wildfires in these dry conditions.

SAWS indicates that the heatwave will remain a concern for the Lowveld of Mpumalanga and Limpopo as well as surrounding areas until Friday, making this one of the most prolonged heat events this season.

Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and heed safety guidelines to mitigate the risks posed by these extreme weather patterns.
