ANC Apologises for Failing Khwezi During Zuma Rape Trial

The African National Congress (ANC) recently issued a heartfelt apology to the family of the late Fezekile “Khwezi” Kuzwayo, marking an emotional acknowledgment of its past shortcomings. Khwezi had accused former ANC president Jacob Zuma of rape in 2006, a case that sparked national outrage and controversy.

ANC KwaZulu-Natal Chairperson Siboniso Duma visited Khwezi’s family home in Mpushini, formally apologizing for the party’s failure to protect her during her legal and personal ordeal. Duma emphasized that the ANC had neglected its constitutional responsibility to uphold the safety and dignity of women and children.

“We dearly apologise for not standing by her. While some individuals spoke out, it was far from enough,” Duma stated. His apology coincided with the recent repatriation of Khwezi’s father, Judson Kuzwayo, a former uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) member who died in exile in 1985.

During Zuma’s trial, he claimed the charges were politically motivated to derail his presidential ambitions. Despite being acquitted when the court ruled the encounter consensual, the case ignited widespread debate about power dynamics, justice, and the treatment of survivors. Khwezi’s close familial ties to Zuma added further complexity to the case, as she regarded him as a father figure.

Duma announced plans to address these issues within Parliament, ensuring that misconduct is tackled regardless of the perpetrator’s influence. He also acknowledged the lingering pain within Khwezi’s family, pledging the ANC’s support in fostering healing and reconciliation.

Khwezi passed away in 2016, but her story remains a significant chapter in South Africa’s struggle against gender-based violence. Zuma has since founded the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, which will celebrate its first anniversary in Durban next weekend.

The ANC’s apology is a step toward addressing its past failures, renewing its commitment to justice and the protection of vulnerable groups.
