Seabelo Senatla is poised to make his long-awaited return to competitive rugby on Saturday, December 9, when the Stormers take on Toulon in their opening match of the Champions Cup at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha. This marks a major milestone in Senatla’s career, as he has been absent from the field for nearly two years following a severe car accident in May 2023.

The former Blitzboks star’s recovery from the injuries sustained in the car crash, particularly to his arm, had many fearing that his rugby career might be over. Initially, Stormers director of rugby John Dobson indicated that Senatla would be out for an indefinite period. However, Senatla’s determination and dedication to his recovery have paid off. After months of hard work, he has been given the green light to return to action.

Senatla was originally scheduled to return against the Sharks last week, but a hamstring issue prevented his participation. Despite the delay, the 30-year-old has now fully recovered and is ready to make his impact on the field once again.

The Stormers have faced challenges in Senatla’s absence, with wingers such as Suleiman Hartzenberg, Angelo Davids, and Ben Loader stepping up. However, the team has missed Senatla’s unpredictable and game-breaking abilities. Now that the speedy wing is back, Stormers fans are hoping his return will give the team a much-needed boost ahead of the clash against Toulon, a team with three Champions Cup titles to their name.

In full training this week, Senatla showed no signs of rustiness, linking up smoothly with fullback Warrick Gelant, reminiscent of their strong partnership during the Stormers’ successful run in the United Rugby Championship.

As the Stormers prepare for what will undoubtedly be a tough encounter with Toulon, they know they must step up their game, especially in the scrums and set-pieces. Hooker Joseph Dweba, who will play in his 50th match for the Stormers, stressed the importance of tightening up their game after their narrow 21-15 loss to the Sharks.

“We’ve been focusing on our set-pieces, which we know Toulon will challenge us on,” said Dweba. “They have a big pack, and we’ve been working hard to fix the mistakes we made last week.”

With Toulon being a formidable opponent, the Stormers’ preparation is key to ensuring a strong showing. Dweba also highlighted the improvements in their lineout play, which will be crucial in the upcoming match.

For Senatla, Saturday’s match is not just about personal achievement but also a chance to help the Stormers take down one of Europe’s most respected sides. As he looks to pick up where he left off, his return marks a new chapter in both his career and the Stormers’ Champions Cup campaign.

The match is set for a 5:15 PM kick-off, and rugby fans can expect an exciting, hard-fought battle between two powerhouses of European and South African rugby.
