Heinz Winckler, South Africa’s first winner of Idols SA, and his wife Alette, have sparked intense criticism after hosting a book launch for their Christian-themed publications at the Breytenbach Centre. Winckler, who gained fame through his music career, has increasingly shifted focus to religious leadership, becoming the lead pastor of a church. However, his recent actions have stirred controversy, particularly with the couple’s latest endeavor in promoting their books.

Controversial Book Launch Draws Backlash

The couple’s book launch, which featured Life Guides for Women and Life Guides for Men, took place at the Breytenbach Centre, a venue named after the anti-apartheid icon Breyten Breytenbach. The event was meant to celebrate their Christian values and share wisdom from their books. However, the launch received swift criticism on social media, with many expressing their discontent over Heinz’s outspoken views on societal matters.

Heinz’s conservative beliefs, which are evident in the books, were met with opposition from many who felt that his stance was outdated in today’s progressive society. Critics focused on his perceived sexist views and accused him of hindering societal progress. The book launch reignited old accusations against Heinz, including claims that he had homophobic and transphobic tendencies, based on his previous statements and actions.

In an attempt to defend his position, Heinz took to Instagram to address the backlash, stating, “If you believe like us that the Bible is the Word of God and believe we must be obedient to it, you are also conservative in the eyes of some ‘woke’ liberals. That’s why we say YES loudly; we are conservative.”

Alette, standing firmly by her husband, echoed his sentiment, stating on social media: “If I am going to make the Sunday tabloids because I believe the word of God is the HIGHEST AUTHORITY, then bring it on!”

This isn’t the first time Heinz has been involved in a controversial discussion. In 2021, he was part of a group of parents in Somerset West who publicly opposed a school’s decision to support a transgender student and her request to be recognized as female. The incident triggered widespread backlash, with many accusing Heinz of promoting transphobia.

The debate around Heinz’s views remains unresolved, with Heinz standing firm in his beliefs, while critics continue to call out what they see as discrimination. As his prominence in both the music and religious communities grows, it remains to be seen how Heinz will navigate the continuing public scrutiny.
