33-Year-Old Arrested in Polokwane Over Illegal Medicine Haul in garage
A 33-year-old man is set to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court in Limpopo on Monday after his arrest for possessing unregistered steroids and other medicines. The arrest occurred in Bendor, Polokwane, following a sting operation by the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Tip-Off Leads to Raid in Bendor
Members of the SAPS Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit acted on a tip-off regarding alleged steroid sales in the Bendor area. According to Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the suspect sourced the unregistered steroids online for distribution.
Police executed a search warrant at the man’s residence in Blue Heaven Estate, uncovering a stash of unregistered drugs. The haul included various Schedule 4 and Schedule 5 substances—strictly controlled drugs requiring a prescription from a medical practitioner—as well as syringes and liquid substances.
Violation of Medicines Act
The suspect was charged with contravening the Medicines and Related Substances Act. Health officials were called to the scene to assist with the investigation, confirming the seized items were unregistered medications.
“The estimated value of the confiscated drugs is approximately R300,000,” said Ledwaba.
Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe praised the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies involved in the operation.
“The swift action and coordination between agencies demonstrate our commitment to combatting the illegal drug trade in Limpopo,” said Hadebe.
This arrest follows a similar case in June, where two foreign nationals in Mpumalanga were apprehended for violating the Medicines and Related Substances Act and the Immigration Act. The suspects were accused of dealing drugs and operating illegally as optometrists.
The suspect in Polokwane will face charges in court, as law enforcement continues its crackdown on the illegal distribution of controlled substances.
