Five Men Sentenced to 205 Years for Murder of Free State Farmer

Five men convicted of the brutal murder of Free State farmer Peterson Andrew have been sentenced to a combined total of 205 years in prison.

The 65-year-old farmer was killed on his Summerslie farm on July 23, 2023. The accused, Teboho Mothebedi (22), Jabulane Ngcongwane (44), Bheki Maphalala (18), Lephosa Motaung (26), and Siyabonga Khumalo (22), were found guilty on charges of murder, housebreaking, robbery, and abduction.

According to South African Police Service (SAPS) Captain Loraine Earle, the group stole various valuables, including laptops, cameras, a cellphone, and a Toyota Urban Cruiser. Andrew was forced into the boot of his vehicle and taken to the Tseseng area in Qwaqwa, where he was murdered.

Each accused received three years for housebreaking, 12 years for aggravated robbery, six years for kidnapping, and 20 years for murder.

Free State Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane commended the investigative team, emphasizing the SAPS’s dedication to ensuring justice for violent crimes.

“This case underscores our commitment to safeguarding our communities and holding criminals accountable for their actions,” said Motswenyane.

The investigation and subsequent sentences highlight the resolve of law enforcement to secure justice for victims and deter similar crimes in the province.
