In response, the City of Johannesburg has launched the Smart City Community Innovation Challenge and Awards 2024, offering R1.1 million in funding for fresh, innovative ideas aimed at addressing these challenges.

As the city faces deteriorating infrastructure and services, despite being home to major corporations and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the initiative seeks to inspire residents to take an active role in modernizing service delivery. Key Details of the Innovation Challenge

Running from October 7 to November 29, 2024, this challenge encourages participants to submit ideas that address everyday issues affecting residents. The focus is on practical, scalable solutions that can significantly improve municipal services and community well-being.

Participants will compete in three award categories, with funding for pilot projects as follows:

• First Place: R300,000 for a winning pilot project.
• Second Place: Two awards of R200,000 each.
• Third Place: Four awards of R100,000 each.

Submissions will be evaluated on several key criteria, including:

• Impact: The solution must visibly improve the lives of residents.
• Reach: It should address widespread issues that affect large communities.
• Service Enhancement: Solutions should improve public services.

• Usability and Feasibility: The solution must be practical and easy to implement, with a clear outline of the steps for execution.
• Community Empowerment: Ideas that empower local communities to solve their own challenges will be prioritized.

Finalists will also receive support from local experts to refine their ideas, and the public will have the chance to vote via the City’s social media platforms.
