TMPD Intercepts 44 Undocumented Foreign Nationals on N1 Highway

The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) intercepted a group of 44 undocumented foreign nationals, including 34 adults and 10 children, on the N1 highway on October 13. The incident occurred as the TMPD Freeway Unit was conducting routine patrols on the N1 southbound near the Hammanskraal exit.

Upon receiving information from a security officer regarding an overloaded minibus taxi in the northern region of Pretoria, the TMPD promptly investigated the situation. The unit discovered a minibus taxi traveling in the wrong direction with 44 occupants, all of whom were identified as undocumented individuals on a journey from Malawi to Johannesburg.

Sergeant Rebone Molapo, the spokesperson for the TMPD, confirmed that none of the suspects had any accompanying luggage. Subsequently, all 44 individuals were taken into custody at the nearest police station and charged with being in the country illegally. The driver of the minibus taxi faced additional charges for failing to provide driving documentation and for being in the country unlawfully.

TMPD reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the residents of Tshwane and ensuring public safety.
