City Power has launched a targeted initiative to recover overdue payments from customers in Bryanston and Randburg, resulting in widespread disconnections of electricity supply.

Enforcement Drive Leads to Disconnections

The enforcement drive, initiated on October 10, impacted several high-value properties in Bryanston, leaving many without power. Sloane Street alone has unpaid bills exceeding R9 million.

Significant Outstanding Debt

City Power’s revenue management specialist, Tshepo Rammuki, disclosed that the total outstanding debt in Randburg amounts to over R650 million. Properties such as Elgin Road (R1.2m), Homestead Avenue (R2.3m), and Moray Drive (R1.3m) also have substantial debts.

Settlement Agreements Reached

Amid intensified enforcement efforts, some homeowners agreed to settle 30% of their debts upfront and pay the remaining amounts over the next three months.

Resistance Encountered

At a property on Sloane Street, City Power faced resistance from the owner who refused access for disconnection, leading to supply disconnection using the nearest pillar box.

Focus on Sustainability

Nqobani Mzizi, senior manager revenue enhancement at City Power, emphasized the need to balance economic pressures on residents with infrastructure sustainability. Affected customers are encouraged to contact the billing department for payment arrangements.
