Kelvin Residents Support Breast Cancer Awareness

Residents of Kelvin recently participated in a breast cancer awareness fun walk organized by their residents’ association and the Breast Health Foundation (BHF) on October 13. The 3.48km walk aimed to show solidarity during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Louise Turner, a Kelvin resident and director at BHF, commended the community for coming together to support those affected by breast cancer. Turner, a breast cancer survivor herself, highlighted the strong sense of community in Johannesburg and emphasized the importance of standing together during challenging times.

The event featured a market day setting with various stalls, including those by local entrepreneurs, the Community Policing Forum (CPF), Ralmed, and medical professionals focused on raising awareness about breast cancer. Dr. Kat Malherbe offered free breast assessments and examinations using AI ultrasound technology.

Dr. Malherbe addressed the importance of early detection and education regarding breast cancer, noting a concerning increase in diagnoses among younger individuals. She emphasized that early detection leads to more treatment options and better outcomes.

The event served as a platform to promote breast cancer awareness, educate the community about self-examinations, and highlight the significance of regular check-ups for early detection. Dr. Malherbe stressed the need for accessible examinations to ensure timely intervention and treatment for those affected by the disease.

The initiative aimed to empower individuals with knowledge about breast health and encourage proactive measures to combat breast cancer. Through community events like the fun walk, awareness and support for those impacted by breast cancer continue to grow, fostering a culture of solidarity and care within the Kelvin community.
