Blues and Jazz Musician Smoke J Lawrence Launches Motherland International Blues and Jazz Festival

On October 1 in Bryanston, the Sandton area came alive with the timeless and transcendental melodies of blues music, performed by acclaimed musician Smoke J Lawrence. As the CEO of the Motherland International Blues and Jazz Festival, Lawrence expressed that the decision to kick off the festival in Sandton was strategic in order to attract a broad audience of music enthusiasts.

Preserving the Blues Genre

During the festival launch, Lawrence highlighted the challenges faced by blues musicians in South Africa, emphasizing the lack of platforms and resources dedicated to supporting the genre. He underscored the significance of bringing the blues to the township as a festival, marking a historic moment in the music scene.

A Musician’s Journey

Lawrence’s musical journey began in 2014 after a setback in his recycling business in KZN. Following this, he relocated to Gauteng and started rebuilding his career by selling snacks outside a public swimming pool. Reflecting on this period, Lawrence shared his experience of transitioning from a business owner to a musician, driven by a newfound passion for music.

Smoke Train Blues Movement

In 2018, Lawrence established the Smoke Train Blues movement with the aim of reintroducing the blues to communities that served as the inspiration for the genre. Through this initiative, he seeks to contribute to the development of grassroots structures supporting blues music in South Africa, emphasizing the African roots and significance of the genre.

Embracing African Heritage

Lawrence delved into the historical context of the blues genre, tracing its origins back to the African experience of slavery. He highlighted the importance of call and response in African culture, illustrating how this aspect is ingrained in the genetic makeup of African communities and resonates through musical expressions like the blues.
