FAK Jeugsimfonie-orkes and German Landes Jugend Akkordeon Orkes Nordrhein-Westfalen Perform at Voortrekkermonument

The FAK Jeugsimfonie-orkes and the German Landes Jugend Akkordeon Orkes Nordrhein-Westfalen (German Youth Accordion Orchestra) presented a concert at the Senotaafsaal of the Voortrekkermonument on October 11 as part of the orchestra’s tour to South Africa.

Under the direction of Jaco van Staden, the FAK Jeugsimfonie-orkes showcased two of its talented soloists: Danelle Rautenbach, who performed the first movement of Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto, and Ellie Pereira, who performed the second movement of Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2.

Pereira, a resident of the Moot, whose brother Josie is a cellist and the youngest member of the orchestra at the age of ten.

The German orchestra, led by Silke D’Inka, enjoyed a guided tour of the monument and explored its historical significance.

Lieandri Ackermann, the orchestra manager of FAK Jeugsimfonie-orkes, mentioned that the German orchestra approached them to offer a concert.

Martina Ahrendt, spokesperson for the visiting orchestra, explained that their group of musicians forms an accordion orchestra.

Van Staden, aside from the outstanding performance, expressed pride in performing with the visiting orchestra for another reason.

“This year marks the second anniversary of the founding of FAK Youth Symphony Orchestra, and I am very proud of the great heights this orchestra has already reached this year,” he said.

He noted that the concert was also a way to thank each orchestra member for their hard work throughout the year.

“It was a privilege to be able to do this type of intercultural project and interesting to experience an accordion orchestra,” he added.

For Van Staden, this year has had many highlights for the orchestra.

“The orchestra tour during the July holiday was one of these highlights where we could entertain local communities,” he mentioned.

He invited young Pretoria musicians to audition for 2025.

“We will be holding auditions for 2025 soon, and interested parties should keep an eye on our media pages.”
