Teen Overcomes Health Crisis

Triston Engelbrecht (18) has triumphed over a life-threatening health ordeal and is now poised to re-enter society.

Recently discharged from Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital (Bara), Triston, a talented matric learner and rugby player from Alberton High School, is demonstrating remarkable resilience in his recovery journey.

Triston underwent splenectomy surgery on October 3, marking a significant milestone in his path to wellness. Adhering diligently to a strict treatment regimen, he is successfully managing blood clot prevention and pressure build-up in his blood vessels, leading to a stabilization of his overall health.

Underlying Cause Unclear

Despite enduring a series of tests, scans, and surgeries, the root cause of Triston’s medical condition remains unknown. He continues to be under medical supervision and is scheduled for further tests at the hospital in two weeks.

Triston’s father, Jacques Engelbrecht, shared that the medical practitioners suspect a congenital issue or a potential infection from bilharzia, a freshwater parasite, might be responsible for Triston’s illness.

Gratefully, the community rallied behind the Engelbrecht family after Jacques sought financial assistance through the Alberton Record, alleviating the burden of Triston’s monthly medication costs of about R3,000.

A Journey of Recovery

Triston’s health ordeal commenced on September 21 last year when he collapsed at home while preparing for a work trip to Bronkhorstspruit.

Following emergency surgery for a perforation in his bowel and perforated ulcer at Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital, Triston’s health further deteriorated, leading to his transfer to Bara for urgent medical attention.

Adapting to a New Normal

Triston, once a vibrant and active individual, now grapples with fatigue, limited mobility, and a drastically altered diet. His daily life has been profoundly affected, necessitating a shift to a new routine.

Although facing challenges in resuming his rugby aspirations, Triston remains optimistic about the possibility of returning to the field, drawing strength from the support of his medical team and loved ones.

Triston’s medical journey continues as he prepares for further tests on October 18, signaling ongoing adjustments to his treatment plan.
