Court Case of Mamelodi Man Accused of Raping Autistic Woman Postponed

The court case involving a 54-year-old man from Mamelodi West who stands accused of raping an 18-year-old autistic woman has been postponed to October 17. Senior prosecutor Advocate Anne-Marie Bendeman confirmed that the investigations have been concluded, leading to the case being transferred to the Pretoria regional court.

The accused made an appearance at the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court on October 3 and will remain in police custody pending further investigations. Advocate Bendeman stated that the trial is set to commence at the Pretoria regional court following the transfer of the case.

Denial of Bail and Arrest

On Thursday, June 20, the accused was denied bail. The victim, an autistic woman from Mamelodi West, has reportedly been diagnosed with an intellectual development disability. The incident took place on April 9 when the accused allegedly took the victim to his house and sexually assaulted her as she was returning home from school.

The accused was formally arrested on April 12 after an extensive investigation conducted by detectives. The victim’s mother recounted that her daughter disclosed the ordeal to her upon returning from work in the evening. They subsequently identified the location of the incident at the accused’s residence.

Seeking Justice

The family member advised them to file a case at the Mamelodi West police station, prompting the mother to take action. Expressing disappointment, the mother revealed that the accused was someone known to them from childhood and lived in close proximity to their residence. She emphasized the emotional distress caused by her daughter having to pass by the accused’s house daily unaccompanied.

The mother advocated for justice for her daughter and urged the court to set a precedent with the accused. The victim has commenced counseling to address the psychological impact of the assault, with the mother expressing hope for her daughter’s recovery.
