Redevelopment of Ga-Rankuwa City Shopping Centre Back on Track

The redevelopment of the Ga-Rankuwa City Shopping Centre, which had previously faced significant delays due to community-related disruptions, is now back on track following a successful intervention by the Public Investment Corporation (PIC).

With the appointment of a new contractor, Concor Construction, the project is expected to be completed on schedule in the first quarter of next year.

Positive Impact of Community Engagement

The revival of the project can be attributed to the appointment of a Community Participation Consultant (CPC), Project Point. This consultancy has focused on rebuilding relationships with the local community, facilitating open dialogue, addressing concerns, and implementing a comprehensive framework for community empowerment.

Executive Head of Economic Inclusion and Sustainability at Property Point, Clement Makotanyane, highlighted the importance of including local stakeholders. He emphasized the need for direct engagement with community leaders and SMMEs to mitigate conflicts and ensure transparency.

Community Optimism and Expectations

The community has responded positively to the news of the redevelopment, with many expressing optimism about the project’s potential to drive local economic growth. Residents anticipate a modern shopping centre that can attract more businesses and visitors, offering a variety of stores and services, including support for local vendors to boost the economy.

Residents see the project as an opportunity to revitalize the local economy, particularly in light of past delays that have affected businesses in the area.

Support for Local Businesses

Residents like Katlego Mathabatha and Sipho Nkadimeng have emphasized the importance of prioritizing local businesses in the shopping centre. They believe that supporting local businesses strengthens the community and fosters economic activity within the area.

Looking ahead, residents have specific expectations for the new shopping centre, although some express cautious optimism mixed with lingering doubts based on past experiences.

Community Renewed Sense of Optimism

Ward 50 councillor Violet Phalwane acknowledged the delays and frustrations experienced with the shopping centre but highlighted that engagement with local businesses has given the community a renewed sense of optimism. Collaborative efforts are expected to ensure the completion of the shopping centre, serving as a hub for economic empowerment in Ga-Rankuwa.
